Appropriately sized and located windows, clerestories, and roof monitors in the corridors and classrooms are used throughout the building to allow for views to nature and the sky and to create a sense of openness and transparency. The ‘Main Street’ corridor provides a clear sense of entry and way finding and no corridor ends in a solid wall. For example, the beehive sculpture was chosen for Columbus City Schools because the beehive symbolizes community. Every sculpture is unique to each school. The Super Art League has worked with a handful of school districts in Ohio. “The sculpture supports the Summer Experience Program objectives of friendship, teamwork, and community,” said Janette Jones of the Super Art League. The art project is a partnership with the District’s Special Education Department and the Super Art League in Columbus, a group of artists whose mission is to integrate visual art with performance art to empower youth through curiosity, creativity, and compassion. Once completed, the sculpture will be known as the Beehive.
